ROLEPLAY JOURNAL FOR PROECT DAISYCHAIN
Character Name: Tasslehoff Burrfoot
Series: DragonLance
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Species: Kender – a kind of halfling.
Sexuality: Straight, I suppose. He had a prearranged marriage when he was a younger kender and had to be dragged back to Kendermore, his homeland, for the wedding but his wife-to-be ran away and ended up with Tas's Uncle Trapspringer. Later, after Tas's death in the novels, many kender claim him as an uncle though.
Appearance: Tasslehoff looks as many kender do – about half the height of a human, with brown eyes and hair scraped up into a topknot on their head. His ears are pointed like an elf's, but no elf would want to be compared to a kender. His body is quite slender – perfect for wriggling into places he's not supposed to be. He could be mistaken for a child of around twelve or so. His clothes are usually colourful and mismatched – mostly bright blue leggings and a fur-lined vest. His face, when he smiles, if full of wrinkles as they develop early in kender and are seen as attractive. He also has a lot of pouches, which he is disappointed to find empty upon his arrival in Manhattan.
Personality: Tasslehoff, to put it simply, is like a young child. He is very excitable and wants to investigate everything. He is fearless in all he does, and the few times when some kind of magic has caused him to feel fear, he has never recognised it. This fearlessness means Tas is always up for new things. He detests being bored and alone. It is said that the worst thing you can do to a kender is to isolate them. He also has an insatiable curiosity, which has led to some interesting adventures.
For the most part, Tasslehoff is very happy-go-lucky and friendly. He is also loyal to his friends and once he considers someone a friend, it is highly unlikely that he will leave them alone. Tas does not have many kender friends and has found that he is unusual in caring so deeply about his non-kender friends. He mourns those who have passed on more than another kender would.
Tasslehoff is also fond of telling stories about his adventures, though whether they are true or not is debatable. Few people will believe a story a kender tells unless they were there to witness it, though kender never lie. They have a reputation for exaggerating though. An exciting tale about battling dragons may have started out as watching the battle from the ground. Like all kender, Tas assumes that everyone is interested in him and what he has to say. He acts hurt if anyone tells him differently.
Tasslehoff does have a conscience about some of the things he does though. Oddly enough, this takes the voice of his now-dead best friend, the dwarf, Flint Fireforge. Occasionally Tas has been known to be serious – the best example would be when he broke a valuable artifact because everyone was arguing over it instead of worrying over the fate of their world. Though he may seem to be perhaps insane or have a severe case of ADD at times, Tas has a heart of gold.
Abilities: Tasslehoff is a skilled locksmith, able to get past almost any door even if it is trapped. He can also cook, as his mother taught him before his Wanderlust developed, and knows how to sail a boat. He knows a few of the native languages of Krynn too and loves to make maps though they are not always accurate.
Weaknesses: In Manhattan, many of a kender's traits could be considered a weakness. Most notable are Tas's curiosity and lack of fear. If he comes face to face with a crab, he is far more likely to try to get a better look than run away. His curiosity has been known to get him into many dangerous situations, but Tas has only ever viewed them as marvellous adventures.
Tas's natural kleptomania – known as 'handling' - will also land him in trouble – a kender never thinks of it as stealing, only 'borrowing' and will often pay no attention to what they put into their pockets. If Tas were to accidentally take something of importance from someone more powerful, he could end up in quite a bit of trouble. However, it is all completely innocent on his part. The surprise he displays at finding random objects in his pockets is always genuine.
Tas is also quick to anger when he is accused of being a thief. It is one of the worst things to call a kender and it will start fights unless someone holds him back. If angered, Tas will respond in typical kender fashion – insulting his foe until they are in an uncontrollable rage. This gives Tas a bigger advantage than he would normally have, being naturally smaller and weaker than a human.
Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider
History: Tasslehoff lived in his home city of Kendermore until he turned sixteen and he was struck by the Wanderlust that strikes all kender in their late teens. He left home and began travelling wherever his heart desired. Eventually, he roamed south and heard of a village called Solace that sounded absolutely facsinating – the villagers had moved into the trees after the great Cataclysm three hundred years before. Since Tas had never seen houses in trees, off he went. Solace proved to be just as interesting as he'd hoped and moreso because he arrived during the Spring Festival. There he made the acquaintance of a dwarf named Flint Fireforge and a half-elf named Tanis Half-Elven. There was a slight misunderstanding about a copper bracelet, which Tanis resolved and Tasslehoff met both in the Inn of the Last Home later that night to look over his maps.
During the meeting, Tasslehoff somehow acquired the bracelet again and vowed to return it as soon as possible. However, by the time morning came, he had forgotten all about it and left Solace. Flint and Tanis chased him down to get it back but Tasslehoff no longer had it. The sea elf princess, who had commissioned the bracelet charged the three with getting it back.
Once the bracelet was retrieved, and the princes went back to her people, Tasslehoff began adventuring with the remaining companions. He met Sturm Brightblade and Raistlin and Caramion Majere. His adventures wit them continued until they were separated. Tas had not wanted to leave his friends but a bounty hunter appeared and took him back to Kendermore to be married. However, he was kidnapped several more times on his trip - once by gnomes who wanted to stuff one of every creature alive and again by a half-orc who needed a map to some ruins in Tas's possession. At the ruins, Tas was captured by a friendly troll and taken to a cave underneath an abandoned Tower of High Sorcery. From the cave, Tasslehoff found himself in another dimension with his Uncle Trapspringer and his bride-to-be, Damaris. Once they escaped, the evil goddess, Takhisis tried to get through the portal but Tas and the other kender managed to close it. In revenge, Takhisis had her son Nuitari cause natural disasters all over Krynn. When Tasslehoff returned, he found Krynn on fire. With his guidance, the kender put the flames out. Afterwards, Damaris decided to marry Uncle Trapspringer and release Tas from his obligation.
When Tasslehoff met up with his friends again, he found himself caught up in another adventure with all of Krynn hanging in the balance. Tasslehoff, though small, turned out to be quite important during what became known as the War of the Lance. His maps guided the companions and he discovered the existance of Dragon Orbs. This led to the finding of the legendary DragonLances, the only weapons able to destroy dragons. Tasslehoff also fought against the dragonarmies atop a bronze dragon with Flint. His lockpicking skills and natural curiosity helped get the companions in and out of trouble of several occasions, the last of which left him poisoned. If Raistlin had not healed him, Tasslehoff would have died.
After the war ended, Tasslehoff returned to Kendermore. He did not see his friends again until two years later. He returned to Solace to find that Caramon was no longer the mighty warrior he had been and desperately needed to get back into shape. They were called to escort a woman to the Tower of High Sorcery at Wayreth, which turned into a quest to prevent Raislin from becoming a god and destroying Krynn - though the destruction of the world was not in Raislin's plan. Their adventure involved traveling back in time to the Cataclysm then forwards to a time where Raislin was battling the Dark Queen Takhisis and Krynn was suffering for it. When they returned to their own time, Tasslehoff stole a bracelet and in doing so, saved Tanis's life. Then he managed to take control of a flying fortress with the help of a gully dwarf so that Caramon and Tanis could deter Raistlin from pursing godhood.
Following the end of this adventure, Tasslehoff went off and had his own little adventures, the latest being his sudden arrival in Manhattan.
